Backer Rod – Product Detail
Description

Backer Rod (also known as Backing Rod) is a polyethylene-based foam rod available in open-cell, closed-cell, and bi-cellular forms. It is commonly supplied in grey or white and is designed to be inserted into joints prior to sealant application.

Its primary function is to control the depth of sealant application, improve adhesion, and optimize joint performance by ensuring the sealant forms a proper two-point bond. It is compatible with most joint sealants and is widely used across construction, civil infrastructure, and facade work.

Features
  • Available in open-cell, closed-cell, and bi-cellular polyethylene foam — suitable for a wide range of joint types and sealant systems
  • Controls sealant depth and promotes correct hourglass shape for optimum joint movement performance
  • Prevents three-sided adhesion, which significantly improves sealant flexibility and longevity
  • Lightweight, compressible, and easy to install by hand — no special tools required
  • Compatible with most silicone, polyurethane, and polysulfide sealants
  • Available in a range of diameters to suit various joint widths
Types Available

Open Cell

Soft and highly compressible. Ideal for wide joints and irregular surfaces. Allows vapour transmission through the foam structure. Best used in facade and curtain wall joints.

Closed Cell

Firm, non-absorbent, and moisture resistant. Preferred for horizontal joints, below-grade applications, and anywhere water infiltration is a concern.

Bi-Cellular

Combines a closed-cell skin with an open-cell core — offering the moisture resistance of closed-cell with the compressibility of open-cell. Versatile all-purpose option.

Fields of Application
🏗️

Expansion Joints

Used as a sealant backup in structural expansion joints in concrete slabs, walls, and frames to ensure correct sealant geometry and movement capacity.

🧱

Wall Joints

Installed in vertical and horizontal wall joints in masonry, precast, and cladding systems to back sealants and prevent over-filling of deep joints.

🛣️

Pavement Cracks

Placed into cracks and joints in pavements, footpaths, and road surfaces before sealant application to control depth and improve bond performance.

🪟

Doors & Windows

Widely used to back sealant beads around door and window frames, ensuring proper sealant profile and long-term weather tightness.

🏊

Wet Areas & Pools

Closed-cell variants are ideal for pool surrounds, wet areas, and below-grade joints where water resistance of the backing material is essential.

🏢

Facades & Curtain Walls

Used extensively in glazed curtain wall systems and building facades as a bond breaker tape alternative in joint sealant applications.
